The ‘Back to the Future’ films of the 1980s and the early 1990s made the DeLorean DMC-12 car famous. The DeLorean car acted as a time machine in the movie series and is one of the most iconic cars in cinema history. Fewer cars have gained as much cult status as the DeLorean, despite its short lifespan.
It’s a two-seater and was first produced in Northern Ireland by the DeLorean Motor Company in the early part of the 1980s. An estimated 9000 DeLorean cars were built between 1981 and 1983. An estimated number of 6500 cars are believed to be in existence today.
Stephen Wynne, the owner of the Texas-based manufacturing company producing the iconic car, believes that this is a huge opportunity and that they are back as a car company again. The company has been selling refurbished versions of the iconic car since 1995. The DMC-12 is to go back into production for the first time since 33 years.
Plans to revive the iconic car were first floated following changes in US law which governs low-volume auto manufacturers. The change allows the company to build replica versions of the winged sports car, without having to comply with modern safety regulations. Production numbers have to be kept below 300, however.
The Texas-based company has almost 3000 original parts left over from the DeLorean factory. 300 cars will be built, at the rate of one per month to start with and eventually they will build one car per week. All the cars will be built in the USA. Reborn DeLorean cars will include a more powerful and environmentally friendly engine than the original model.
The first replica of the iconic car is anticipated to be ready by 2017. Depending on the engine that is chosen for the car, the price may be around $100,000. Refurbished DeLorean models retail for $45,000 – $55,000. The new DeLorean will have bigger wheels, bigger brakes, and upgraded suspension. It will have upgraded interiors with features such as Bluetooth, GPS and heated seats amongst other modern gadgetry.
It looks like the DeLorean is coming back to the future! We are very excited! What about you? Do let us know in the comments what you think about this.
